Visit to America: Home of the free
As I am one of the ten people who make up the senior council and as the only one fulfilling the space of the faith secretary, I was personally invited to a fully sponsored trip to America to attend a spiritual leadership program, in hopes that I would bring back what I have learned from the trip back to Singapore. I have just arrived today (which explains why I was unable to update the blog yesterday) and I am thankful to say that the jetlag that I have experienced is not as bad as I made it out to be: not sleeping for the whole night prior to the trip was a good idea after all.
My first impressions of America was not a very good one. Because of a mishap of the location of the hostel we will be staying in, my friends and I had to make a trip by foot through the dodgy areas of the city. Over there we saw homeless people smoking what could be weed as well as prostitutes. Although scary at first, this gave me a rough idea of what the worst of America looks like. Being the optimist, it could only meant that whatever I see will be an improvement, as I start to see the better of America.
I managed to see the Golden Gate bridge today as well as meet some of the event co-ordinators. Because my school arrived a few days prior to the event, they were kind enough to show our school around the country, at least for a few days until the event started. Tomorrow lies more adventure for me as our tourist sights are booked using the American GO!Card. However for now I am confined to the inside of our hostel. For it is at this time of night there would be the frequent use of narcotics and alcohol nearby, so it would be unwise to leave the safety of the hostel.
I wish to tell you more, but sleep seems like a better alternative, for what lies ahead requires me to wake up early.
Cheers,
Matthew Tan
