Me and my future
I got into SMU (Singapore Management University) for SIS (Schools of Information Systems)! In vague and few words as possible, the SIS course essentially deals with computer managing for corporate work. This includes virus protection, encryption against hackers and the maintenance of IT systems for any corporation. Alumni members have worked at large scale technology firms such as IBM and Google while students are assigned with their own small scale projects such as the very successful start up 'Carousell', which is an online marketing service. In other words, this course allows me to work anywhere in the world in almost any occupation; this course is as flexible as it gets. SMU is also what I consider to be the most suitable university for me, if not the best university in Singapore ( I find NUS's (National University of Singapore) intake numbers to be much too big for them to handle. Additionally bureaucracy has slipped in and admissions has become much more of a hassle than it should be. In my books it has already slipped off the #1 university in Singapore and I'm sure it will too in other metrics).
Although not actively thinking about it, university life is something that I looked forward to for a long time as a child, having grown up in an international environment where people travel to all sorts of fun places to live as a university student. I suppose that after working my whole life to be able to travel to other places I find it ironic that I choose to stay at home instead. Although I do have the choice to go overseas for my undergraduate studies, I prefer to stay here to ensure that I have the funds to go overseas for my postgrad studies instead (the government subsidises some of the fees if I were to stay here) which I consider a lot more important, and SMU was my number one choice.
I was happy than I expected to be. I suppose that was because after all this time, my future had some kind of direction (besides National Service, which takes away 2 years of my life). I look forward with the future now with a bit more positivity, knowing that there is a path that I get to follow. That doesn't mean that I will follow the path though. Perhaps there will be twists and turns, perhaps it will fork out in two different directions, perhaps I won't take the offer to get into SMU, but it sure looks that way, and at the very least I'm happy that I have some path to follow.
SMU is a city campus university, nearby Orchard Road
