THIMUN Singapore

The main reason why I was unable to post anything new on this blog for a week was due to my attendance at THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations), known to be one of the most prestigious Model United Nations Conferences in the whole world, comparable only to only another found in Europe. Being the first batch of the year representing our school, it was considered an honor to go. Since I was going to move back to Singapore soon after spending three years in Jakarta, I considered that it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do the THIMUN conference in, ironically, Singapore.

With the conference being four days long of full debating and lobbying, it was an understatement to say that it was tiring. However there was a lot of time to make new acquaintances (all of which I will probably forget upon checking upon my Facebook friendpage less than a year from now), especially during lobbying time, already creating a student network in Asia, from Indonesia all the way to China and Japan.

One of the main issues that I have suffered during the trip the entire time was the issue with lack of sleep. Because my roommate was an extrovert with a love for socialising, he would often invite me to go to other rooms against the teacher's consent until at least 2 o'clock, when we had to wake up at 6. Therefore often enough I would wake up only receiving 5 hours of sleep at a maximum. With a lot of work to catch up when I came back, I found myself with slightly more sleep, but not enough to compensate for my fatigue developed during the trip in Singapore until today.

Nevertheless, it is an experience that I will never forget. My first and probably last conference in THIMUN. However how will the roads of fate turn? Who knows when I will return? Only time will tell.

Cheers,
Matthew Tan
