Exploring Singapore

Despite Singapore often creating overpriced tourist attractions purely for foreigners, there are many other places that pique my interest with the best price that anyone can ever give me: free.

Living with a relatively high income family does have its drawbacks (although I could argue endlessly that the advantages outweigh much more many times over), one of which was the fact that I was driven all over the city by my parents. This meant that I was to travel from point A to point B without ever stopping to smell the flowers. For the whole of my childhood I have never had the opportunity to explore Singapore by my lonesome. That is, until I returned to a Singapore as a teenager, finally earning the independence to travel alone by via public transport routes.

One of the first places that I was interested in visiting in Singapore was a place called Fort Canning Park. Because organising family events was particularly hard, especially with me playing the role of the submissive son in the family with no influential power whatsoever, I invited a friend of mine to explore the place with me instead. For once in my life I could literally "stop to smell the flowers".

As you can see, it was the cool sign that attracted my attention.

Nearby was the Singapore National Museum, yet another place that would be considered 'too boring' a place to bring my family. But me and my friend are similar in the sense that we never truly had the chance to explore Singapore, and that we have spent a long time overseas. Therefore for the both of us, seeing someplace new was already an adventure for both of us.

The places itself was not a sight worth travelling for, but the fact that it was somewhere that I went to explore on my own initiative has its own special kind of reward.

As the days go by I will travel to more places in Singapore, and I will let you know if I do find any cool places to see in Singapore.

From the curious Singaporean.

Cheers,
Matthew Tan
