Limitless

I woke up at 6 am on Saturday. With my inability to sleep while not wanting to be punished for "playing games early in the morning" (which apparently is worse than if you play in the afternoon), I decided to watch the movie that I downloaded on impulse instead: Limitless.

I was surprised that many didn't watch this movie despite it being a blockbuster film. Thus, I take it to be my responsibility to convince my readers to watch this movie.

The movie is a thriller starring Bradley Cooper, who acts as the protagonist named "Eddie Morra". Eddie Morra is the living embodiment of a vegetable. Being proud of finally getting his first writing contract seven years after graduating, Eddie is suffering a writing block, which people just take to him accounting for his laziness. His girlfriend leaves him soon enough. He's not financially independent, and has done nothing in his life. This all changes when he meets his ex brother-in-law, Vernon, who claims to be in the "pharmaceutical industry" although his appearance and attitude already tell us that he was dealing with illicit drugs instead. He passes Moora a drug called the NZT 48, which he claims to be able to use 100% of your brain. Unlike most drug dealers, he tells the truth.

However this is not like "Lucy". The drug has side effects, and there were many of them using it at the same time, accounting for all the "hotshots" that went from a lowlife to one of the most successful people in America in the space of two years, and Morra was no different. Morra, in the space of a few weeks finds himself on Wall Street making deals worth millions of dollars. With Vernon getting shot in the head, Morra is the only one with a huge supply of NZT, and NZT users (the ones alive anyway) are out looking for him and will get the drug at any cost.

As much as I love this movie for the plot, there is one big that made the biggest impact. To quote the movie:

"And you would even think that, would only show me how unprepared you are to be on your own. I mean you do know you're a freak? Your deductive powers are a gift from God or chance or straight shot of sperm or whatever or whoever wrote your life-script. A gift, not earned. You do now know what I know because you have not earned those powers. You're careless with those powers, you flaunt them and you throw them around like a brat with his trust-find. You haven't had to climb up all the greasy little rungs. You have not been bored blind at the fundraisers. You haven't done the time and that first marriage to the girl with the right father. You think you can leap over all in a single bound. You haven't had to bribe or charm or threat your way to a seat at that table. You don't know how to assess your competition because you haven't competed."

This is the main lesson that I take away with me: that no matter what, there is no easy way to success, no matter how smart you are (although it may depend on what you consider 'success'). No matter your intellect, one has to fight their way to the top, and doing it through the easy way (NZT) only serves to have side effects that you will never truly know the effects of until it is over. So I guess the main moral of the story is that i you are finding trouble in your life, you're probably on the right track.

Oh, do be aware of the age restriction of the movie. It's not a movie for the faint hearted.

But recommended nonetheless, 10/10

Cheers,
Matthew Tan
