Hair for Hope 2014
Hair for Hope is a charity event which is, at the moment, exclusively held in Singapore. It is an event held by the Children's Cancer Foundation (as seen in the graphic) to raise awareness for children with cancer, particularly those who are suffering from Leukemia, probably the most common from of cancer in Singapore.
The process is done by shaving the heads of volunteers so as to reassure child cancer patients about their appearance and that at the end of the day it is not only appearance that gives you your identity. Pledge cards are given to volunteers so as to try and collect money for child cancer research in the process.
My school being one of many affluent, enthusiastic people, managed to raise an astounding amount of money: over a hundred thousand Singapore dollars. This is the most amount of money ever raised by a school in Singapore, ourselves as an institution being the 5th in Singapore to raise the most money.
Me being part of the senior council and thus co coordinator of the whole event, I was very proud of the council's achievement in being able to, as a group, organize such a big event all by our lonesome. This experience has made me realise of how, in reality, organising an event is not such as impossible task as people make it out to be.
I, in this blogpost, hope to spread awareness of Hair for Hope, as well as to encourage you to try and create new events of your own for whatever intention you hope to fulfill. In our school, do to the young age of the school, we see many students creating events that become an annual thing of their own and they act as beacons of inspiration for many to do the same. Had it not for the time constraints of my job and my role as a student, I would probably do the same. Instead, I have to hold the legacy of others and organise yearly events that others have created before.
So in my previous posts, I asked you all to try something new today. Why can't you encourage others to do the same?
Cheers,
Matthew Tan
