Happy Birthday to me and my blog!

It's strange, because this is a birthday that doesn't feel like one. I'm still in the midst of my exams, and I spend most of my day studying more than any form of celebration. In fact, I find that the anniversary of this blog is something worth celebrating a lot more at the moment.

I remember the exact moment I started this blog. It was late at night, when the celebration of my birthday has ended and everyone has gone to sleep. The idea of this blog formulated a week before, but I supposed that I should have something to look forward to, and a birthday so that I remember when this blog was created. Additionally I wanted to mark an important moment in my life, and I suppose I considered my 16th birthday to be one.

I'm turning 19 this year, which means that I am on my last year as a teenager. When I turned a teenager 6 years ago, I expected the teenage years to be the best days of my life. My maturing both physically and mentally has allowed me to grow as a person, and see the world for what it truly is rather than what I wished it to be when I was younger. It's a much crueler, sick place than I imagined, but I always like to think of acknowledging a problem being present before trying to change. I imagined my teenage years to be a lot of firsts. First alcoholic drink, first girlfriend and at the time I thought 'first part time job!'. But I never realised that for people in Asia your younger years are put more into value-adding rather than actually earning money, and as a result I felt that I haven't done anything to give back to my family or society, but I suppose that comes later.

At the moment I don't want to type too much, but you'll be sure that I'll do more updates soon after the exams. Of course, this includes all my other blogs as well, visually and content wise.

Cheers,
Matthew Tan
